## Other platforms
### Some _obvious_ platforms e.g. LinkedIn
For various reasons, I am not on a handful of the larger platforms. Check on the [home](/) page in the **About** section under the **Notable Questions** header if you wish to know why.
> Below I drop a sort of rant on secure messaging, you can skip reading. I will move this elsewhere later.
### Not recommended
I do not use various chat apps, or I do not recommend them for private messaging. Some examples:
- SMS
- WhatsApp (anything from Meta)
- Telegram
- Line (both JP and World versions)
- Viber
These options lack privacy and sometimes basic security features. Metadata is often enough not end-to-end encrypted, let alone the messages themselves. Metadata is generally enough information to infer information about you that should have stayed between you and the recipient. Data from these apps are used to track you, share your information for various reasons such as advertising or AI training among other reasons detrimental to the user.
### Platforms I'd recommend
There are a few platforms I generally would recommend, though if I am on them, my contact details are not shared publicly.
- Signal
- SimpleX
- Briar
Each is solid in their own right. Signal is probably the easiest for users to switch from if they are used to apps like Line or WhatsApp. One downside is that Signal still requires a phone number, which can be personally identifiable.
